In my 20s, like most of us, I spent time having fun and trying to find myself. I ran my first and last marathon, took voice lessons, dabbled in rock climbing, and traveled everywhere my humble teaching salary could take me. I even took a mosaics class, where I started a project the instructor warned me would be too difficult. I loved playing with the small, colored, glass tiles and seeing the shapes and designs that manifested before me. After the course, I swore I would continue to work on the unfinished project, but like so many youthful endeavors, it was forgotten and relegated to a box in the closet.
Fast forward ten years later to the COVID era. I found myself teetering on the brink of anxiety after a failed marriage, the loss of family, and a slough of emotional and mental issues. My forgotten project, coupled with counseling and good support system, helped me work through the pain.
For a variety of reasons, life has never been the same. In His infinite wisdom, God knew my experience with mosaics and art wasn't over. Creating pieces has been a bright spot in an otherwise dark journey.
I published my first children's book, The Story of Mrs. Inez, in 2019. Little Eddy Wants a Hamster came out in 2021.
As a former elementary school teacher, I know books are an important tool to explain difficult concepts and nurture empathy. I'm still an avid reader, and there's nothing quite like the delight or rage a talented writer evokes.
While still dabbling in writing, I now create mosaics and encourage others to find their voice through art.
Art has been healing. Whatever creative outlet a person decides, I want them to bake, smudge, etch, or sculpt their way to better mental health. I believe creativity has the power to support our well-being and build connections.
My website is a starting place if finding a new venture is daunting. Come on over, and we'll figure it out together.
Research has shown that learning something new can improve brain function. My hope is that you find something on my page that takes you somewhere you never imagined. As Dr. Seuss said, "Oh! The Places You'll Go!"
Break through those limits you set for yourself. Through tutorials, books, workshop, or blog posts, you'll find something that strengthens you and propels you into the world of possibility.
Being creative is not about being "good" at art. It's about expressing yourself and doing something that brings you joy.
Your infectious, brilliant inner peace will help you live your best life and inspire others to do the same.
I love living life with this little boy. My son was the inspiration behind Little Eddy Wants a Hamster. He loves bugs, Roblox, and jumping off anything high enough to cause my heart to briefly stop.
There are those times, though, that he'll sit and work on his own project next to me. Those times are the best.
